The County Recorder has marriage records for events occurring in Santa Cruz County from 1851 to the present.

We are unable to issue marriage certificates for marriages where the license was purchased someplace other than Santa Cruz County.

A marriage certificate (proof of marriage) may be available for request after the marriage license (license to wed) is registered with the County Recorder.  This service is only available if the marriage license was issued as a regular license in Santa Cruz County.

If you are not yet married and are looking for a marriage license, please go to the Santa Cruz County Clerk’s website at: Marriage Licenses

Who can obtain a Non-Confidential (Public) Marriage certificate?

California law defines individuals who can obtain an authorized copy of a birth, death, or marriage certificate as:

  • The registrant (party to the marriage, not party solemnizing marriage) or a parent, legal guardian, child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or domestic partner of the registrant.
  • A party entitled to receive the record as a result of court order or an attorney or licensed adoption agency seeking the birth record in order to comply with the requirements of Section 3140 or 7603 of the Family Code. (Please include a copy of the court order.)
  • A member of a law enforcement agency or a representative of another governmental agency, as provided by law, who is conducting official business. Authorized personnel from a government agency must provide authorization from the government agency and government agency ID.
  • An attorney representing a registrant or a registrant’s estate, or any person or agency empowered by statute or appointed by a court to act on behalf of the registrant or the registrant's estate (Include a copy of the power of attorney or documentation identifying you as executor.)

What is the difference between an Authorized Copy and an Informational Copy?

An Authorized Copy of a marriage certificate is required to change your name on a driver’s license, passport, social security card, claim insurance benefits, or for other services related to an individual’s identity.

Those who are not authorized by law to request a Authorized Copy will receive an Informational Copy. An Informational Copy is marked "INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY".

Both an Authorized copy and Informational copy are considered “certified copies”.
